In general, the term "artificial intelligence" is used to describe systems that emulate or simulate human or animal intelligence – from simple patterns to very complex systems. Typically, a distinction is made between:

  • Smallest embedded systems
  • Medium-sized and simple expert systems such as customer support systems
  • Large distributed expert systems: "big data”

The areas of application are already diverse today – from autonomous driving, where the vehicle makes independent decisions based on collected data, to customer service via intelligent chatbots or swarm intelligent robots that solve complex tasks in a neuronal swarm intelligent way. AI is also increasingly being used for predictive processes. For example, mail order companies use weather and user data to predict customers' shopping behavior.
